Dan McRae - Cray Fisherman 09 September 08
Dan installed his WASSP WMB-160F Multi Beam Fishing System in May 2006 and we caught up with him at the end of his first season using this product.

Why did you invest in the WASSP Multi Beam Sonar?
I decided to purchase the WMB-160F to gain an edge over other local fisherman and to update the technology on board.
Has it been successful?
Yes. One of the biggest benefits we have experienced has been the huge savings in fuel. Individual pinnacles make up the majority of our ground where you can waste a lot of time and fuel searching for these.
The mapping continues to surprise me. Unless you get in the water yourself you are just second-guessing. Fishing up to 65 odd metres I would rather learn from the WASSP!
What functions do you use and when?
I would use the single beam sonar alongside the 2D contour map on a regular basis.
For fishing unfamiliar ground and recording large areas of the seafloor the 3D screen works really well.
In close amongst thick kelp beds, the sonar is very effective in defining rocks from the weed.

How does it help on a day-to-day basis?
Time is more precious than anything, with gear in extremely tidal conditions the WASSP gives you exact locations of foul grounds, minimising human error and allowing us a safer and more consistent catch.
History is another feature that is irreplaceable.
This is a must for building a database of your fishing grounds and having the most accurate information easily available at your fingertips.
Would you want to be Commercial fishing without a WASSP?
No!
